2.4GHz vs 5GHz WiFi: which one should your device use
Short answer: 5GHz is faster but covers less distance and struggles through walls; 2.4GHz reaches farther and penetrates walls better but is slower and shares its airwaves with more devices and household electronics. Most routers now broadcast both under one network name and let each device pick automatically, so you rarely need to choose by hand.
The actual tradeoff
Every WiFi band is a range of radio frequencies, and the two your router uses split the difference between speed and reach in opposite directions.
5GHz carries more data per second and has far less interference, because fewer devices and appliances use it. The cost is range: higher frequencies lose strength faster over distance and get blocked more easily by walls, floors, and furniture. Stand a room or two away from the router and a 5GHz connection can drop off noticeably before a 2.4GHz one does.
2.4GHz trades that speed for reach. It travels farther and passes through walls with less signal loss, which is why it’s the band that still reaches a garage or a back bedroom a 5GHz signal can’t. The tradeoff is a lower maximum speed and a crowded neighborhood: 2.4GHz is also used by Bluetooth devices, baby monitors, cordless phones, and microwave ovens, so it’s more prone to interference in a busy home.
Newer routers add a third option, 6GHz (WiFi 6E and WiFi 7), which pushes the speed-for-range tradeoff even further toward speed. It’s the least crowded band, since so few devices support it yet, but it has the shortest range of the three.
Why some devices only show up on 2.4GHz
Not every device supports both bands. Cheaper WiFi chips, especially in smart plugs, cameras, sensors, and other smart-home gadgets, are often built for 2.4GHz only, since it’s cheaper to manufacture and uses less power. If you’re setting up a new smart-home device and it can’t find your network, that’s often why: the app is looking for a 2.4GHz signal, and if your router only broadcasts a combined or 5GHz-only name, the device has nothing to connect to.
Older laptops and phones can have the same limitation. Anything from roughly the WiFi 4 (802.11n) era or earlier may lack a 5GHz radio entirely.
How to check or split the bands on your router
Most routers today use band steering: both bands share one network name and password, and the router decides which one each device connects to based on signal strength and load. For most households this is the right setting to leave alone, since it needs no manual switching and each device generally lands on the band that suits it.
If you need more control, for example forcing a smart-home device onto 2.4GHz during setup, most routers let you split the bands into two separate network names in the wireless settings, usually labeled something like -2.4G and -5G. To get there:

- Log in and open the wireless or WiFi settings
- Look for a band-steering toggle, or separate SSID fields per band if you want to split them
Splitting the bands is mainly a troubleshooting move. Once the device you needed on 2.4GHz is connected, there’s no downside to switching band steering back on for everything else.
Does the band affect how many devices can connect?
Not directly, but it plays into it. Each band is its own radio, so a router broadcasting both effectively has two pools of airtime instead of one, which is part of why splitting device load across bands helps on a busy network.
