How to tell if someone is stealing your WiFi

Slow WiFi isn’t the signal

A sluggish connection is the usual reason people start worrying, but it’s a weak signal on its own. A phone backing up photos, a console downloading an update, or a smart TV auto-updating its firmware can all eat bandwidth without anyone touching them. Before assuming an intruder, it helps to know what’s actually normal for your household — see how many devices can realistically connect to your WiFi and what actually limits speed.

The real test isn’t how fast your connection feels. It’s whether every device using it is one you recognize.

Check the connected-devices list

Log into your router’s admin page, usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, and open the section labeled Attached Devices, DHCP Clients, or Client List, depending on the brand. Go through the list and account for each row:

  • Phones and laptops are usually obvious from the name.
  • Smart TVs, consoles, and streaming sticks often show a manufacturer name instead of your own label.
  • Smart plugs, cameras, and thermostats are the easiest to forget you own.

If a name doesn’t tell you enough, run the MAC address through a MAC vendor lookup. The first half of it identifies the manufacturer, which is often enough to place an oddly-named device as your own smart plug rather than a stranger’s laptop.

What actually counts as evidence

One unfamiliar entry, after you’ve accounted for every phone, laptop, TV, and smart-home gadget in the house, is real evidence. A vague sense that the internet is slower than usual is not. The difference matters, because acting on the wrong signal wastes time and doesn’t fix anything.

Also worth ruling out: a guest network you turned on once and never disabled. It has its own client list and its own password, separate from your main WiFi, and it’s a far more likely place to find a forgotten device than your primary network.

If you find a device that doesn’t belong

Once you’ve confirmed an entry isn’t yours, the fix is the same regardless of how it got there: change your WiFi password. Every device, including your own, has to reconnect with the new one. Anything that doesn’t know it gets locked out immediately, no further steps needed.

Pick a password that’s actually hard to guess this time — run it through the password strength checker before you commit to it. A default or reused password is usually how an unfamiliar device got on the network in the first place, whether through a weak WiFi password or an admin login nobody ever changed from the router’s default.

Keeping it from happening again

A network with a strong WiFi password and a separate guest network for visitors is hard to get onto by accident or by guesswork. Beyond that, the most reliable habit is the simplest one: check the connected-devices list every month or two, while the list is still short enough to scan in a few seconds. Catching one unfamiliar device among fifteen you already recognize is a lot easier than reconstructing your whole household’s device inventory after the fact.
