How to set up a guest WiFi network (and why you should)

Short answer: Log into your router’s admin page, find the Guest Network or Guest WiFi section, turn it on, and give it a name and password separate from your main network. Most routers isolate guest devices from your other devices by default, which is the actual point.

Why bother with a second network

Every device on your main WiFi can usually see every other device on it, at least at the network level. That’s fine when it’s just your own phones and laptops, but it gets messier the moment someone else’s device joins, whether it’s a visitor’s phone, a contractor’s laptop, or a kid’s friend who wants the password for a video app. A guest network puts that device on its own separate segment. It gets internet access, and nothing else on your network.

It also means you’re not handing out your real WiFi password to people you don’t live with. If you ever need to change it, having a guest network means the reason usually isn’t “the babysitter still has it.”

Turn it on

The setting lives somewhere under Wireless or WiFi settings, though the exact path varies by brand:

  • Netgear, Linksys, TP-Link: Wireless > Guest Network, a toggle plus its own name and password fields
  • Asus: Wireless > Guest Network, supports multiple guest networks with separate schedules
  • eero, Google Wifi, Deco, Orbi (app-managed): in the app, under network settings, usually labeled Guest WiFi or Guest Network
  • Cable gateways (Xfinity, Spectrum): a Guest WiFi toggle on the same admin page as your main WiFi settings

If you don’t see it, check for a firmware update first. Guest networking has been standard on consumer routers for years, but a handful of older or budget models still lack it. Find your router’s admin login if you’re not sure how to reach the settings page at all.

Naming and password choices

Give the guest network its own SSID instead of a name that looks like a variant of your main one. “Smith-Guest” is fine; appending “-guest” to an exact copy of your real SSID tells anyone paying attention exactly which network is real, which mostly matters if you’d rather visitors not know.

Set a real password. An open guest network means anyone in range can join without asking, which turns “guest network for visitors” into “free WiFi for the street.” Run whatever password you land on through a strength checker before saving it.

Check that isolation is actually on

Most routers enable client isolation for guest networks by default, meaning devices on the guest network can’t see or connect to each other or to your main-network devices. Some routers list this as a separate checkbox, usually called “Allow guest to see other devices” or “Guest network isolation,” so open the guest network settings and confirm the actual state instead of assuming the default is what you want.

Once it’s set up, check your connected devices list periodically. You’ll see guest devices listed separately from your main network’s clients, which is a fast way to confirm the split is actually working and to spot anything that shouldn’t be there.

What not to put on it

Smart-home devices generally need to be on the same local network as the phone controlling them, at least during setup. A guest network’s isolation blocks that handshake, so a smart plug or camera set up while connected to the guest network usually won’t find your phone. Keep those on your main network. The guest network is for other people’s devices, not your own extra gadgets, even if the isolation sounds appealing for a device you don’t fully trust.
