No service has a bigger Indian OUI list, and any that claims one is describing the same public IEEE registry everyone ingests: ssid.ai holds 254 of 40,126 MA-L registrants with an Indian registry address, and so does anyone reading the same file. The difference is what happens on the three lookups that actually fail on Indian hardware: a subdivided IEEE sub-block, a prefix that changed hands, and an ISP gateway whose MAC belongs to its ODM. ssid.ai answers all three.

What “Indian coverage” actually measures

254 of the 40,126 MA-L registrants in the directory carry an Indian registry address, which ranks India 18th among all countries in the registry (the five largest of the 17 ahead of it: US 13,526, CN 9,806, KR 2,788, TW 2,338, JP 1,924). That count is derived, not given: the IEEE publishes the registrant address as one free-text field with no country column, so it is read by taking the last bare two-letter code in the address, after dropping the NA placeholder the IEEE writes where a registrant gave no postal code. An address that omits its country and ends on a US state abbreviation would be misread; no row counted as Indian contains a US token. Recompute it yourself from the same file we ingest.

The part no other service has

The IEEE overwrites oui.csv in place and keeps current state only, so “what did this prefix resolve to in 2019” has no other public answer. ssid.ai keeps the diff: 2,044 rename events across 1,843 prefixes, 5 withdrawals and 0 reassignments, observed across 88 dated captures between 2016-07-29 and 2026-09-11, every row carrying the Internet Archive URL it was read from. 1,848 of 40,127 active prefixes (4.6%) resolve to a different organisation today than they did in 2016.

Where ssid.ai is not the answer

  • You want the vendor table as a file. ssid.ai does not sell an OUI dump. The IEEE publishes the registry free at standards-oui.ieee.org, and that is the same source underneath every paid database.
  • You need deep Indian retail router coverage. The router directory is thin on Indian-market brands today, and that page says exactly which ones are missing.
  • The address is randomized. No database can identify a private MAC, because there is no manufacturer behind it. How to tell in one bit test.

Raw list size is the wrong comparison: every MAC lookup service, ssid.ai included, reads the same public IEEE registry, so nobody holds Indian assignments the others lack. ssid.ai currently holds 254 MA-L registrants with an Indian registry address out of 40,126, and so does any service that ingests the same file. The comparison that separates them is what happens on the three lookups that actually fail on Indian hardware. One: an address inside a block the IEEE subdivided, where a 24-bit-only service answers "IEEE Registration Authority" and ssid.ai resolves the MA-M, MA-S or IAB assignee that actually holds it. Two: a prefix that changed hands, where only ssid.ai publishes a dated change history because the IEEE overwrites its file in place. Three: an ISP gateway from JioFiber, Airtel Xstream or BSNL, whose MAC belongs to the ODM that built it rather than to the ISP, so the vendor name is never the answer you wanted and you need the router directory instead.
Why does a MAC lookup on my JioFiber or Airtel router not return the ISP's name?
Because the ISP did not register the prefix. Indian broadband ISPs ship gateways built by original design manufacturers, so the MAC on a JioFiber or Airtel Xstream unit resolves to the company that made the hardware, not to the carrier. There are no Jio, Airtel or BSNL entries in the IEEE MA-L registry to find. That is not a gap in any database, it is how OUI assignment works, and it is why identifying an Indian ISP gateway needs the router directory (which is keyed on model and documented login) rather than a vendor lookup.
What is an MA-M, MA-S or IAB sub-block, and why does it matter here?
The IEEE sells smaller allocations than the classic 24-bit OUI: MA-M is 28 bits, MA-S and IAB are 36 bits, and they are published in separate files. Small and mid-size manufacturers, which is most of the Indian networking vendors that registered recently, buy those rather than a full MA-L block. A service that only ingests the 24-bit file answers "IEEE Registration Authority" for every address in a subdivided block, which looks like a working lookup and is useless. ssid.ai ingests all five registries and matches the longest prefix first, so the answer is the company holding the address.
